RH and Lori Sistare

Lori Sistare enjoyed catching up with retiring Sports Editor Robert Howey at a drop-in Wednesday, July 20, to celebrate his 45 years with The Lancaster News. Sistare worked for TLN for 35 years.

“Mr. Lancaster News” — that is what I think of when I think of Robert Howey. When you mention The Lancaster News, everyone has something to say about Robert. He is the most recognized employee I think we have ever had.

We even made a scarecrow of him back in 2018 that was displayed on Main Street and everyone knew it was him.

I worked with him for 35 years, but long before that, he was covering Lancaster County sports.

Robert is the best at what he does. I am in awe of him. His style of writing is knowledgeable, informative and witty. He knows every player or athlete, their stats and who their parents are. He knows scores and can describe plays from games and tournaments that took place years ago.

He follows players’ careers and knows everything about them. He has something nice to say about everyone. I can honestly say I have never heard him say anything bad about anyone. The truth is, I have never heard anyone say a bad thing about Robert. He is respected and loved by anyone who meets him.

I worked closely with Robert during football season. Whether it was putting together the football section or participating (and winning) in the Pigskin Picks, his love of sports was obvious. Some of my favorite conversations with him took place early in the morning. I would come in early and he had been there writing all night.

He was a great co-worker, but a better friend. He knows all my family and what is going on in their lives. He knows my love of football and made sure I knew of any breaking news concerning my beloved Gamecocks and Panthers. His phone calls and messages all started out the same, “Lori, this is Robert Howey,” and ended with “Go Panthers! Go Gamecocks!”

There is so much more I could say about Robert. His dedication, his wit, his kindness, taking my snacks out of my drawer when he worked late nights at the office (LOL). But the one thing that stands out the most is that Robert cares. He truly cares. He cares about your kids. He cares about the schools. He cares about sports. He cares about the community.

He cared enough to provide you with sports news for 45 years, working all hours of the day and night, taking time away from his family, but loving every minute of it.

Whoever takes his place will have really big shoes to fill. Not just from the sports aspect, but because everyone who know Robert loves and respects him. That is something that not just anyone can accomplish.

Congratulations, Robert! Enjoy your retirement and best of wishes to you, Anne, Caroline and Jackson! You deserve it! Have fun! Go Panthers! Go Gamecocks!
