DORCHESTER — The Central High track and field team had a solid outing at Woodland High School on Saturday, according to head coach Billy Blakeney. The Eagles tied with Silver Bluff for fourth with 51 team points.
Phillip Simmons (Charleston) won the meet with 188 points, followed by Woodland (109) and Wade Hampton in Greenville (77). Regardless of the results, the Eagles’ progress and striving to reach heights have been the same.
Senior Ay’den Chambers qualified for the state meet in the 200 and 400-meter races along with the 4x100 and 4x400 relay races. Chambers won the 400m in 51 seconds. Blakeney was impressed with his perseverance Friday.
“I saw pure determination in Ay’den as he refused to lose in the 400m as his streak with one final 400m race to run,” Blakeney said. “Our ultimate goal is to still bring home the (title) Friday at the state championship.”
Junior Kade Ashcraft qualified for multiple race events; including a fifth-place finish in the 3,200m race (10:47.72) and sixth place in the 1,600m race (4:53.94). In the hurdle events, freshman Quincy Bend qualified for the 110m and 400m events with times of 16.30 and 1:02.10.
Junior Amira Raso punched her ticket to the meet in the 800, 1,600, and 3,200 girls races — she placed second in the 800 and 1,600 with personal record times of 2:29.42 and 5:39.84.
Freshman Koby Davis had a mark of 133 feet and 2 inches in the javelin event and placed third to qualify for the state meet.
The Eagles will attempt to bring home their first state title since 2014 when they compete in the South Carolina AA meet at Lower Richland High School this coming Friday.
