On June 14, Lancaster native Kathy Maness was the top Republican vote getter to become the party’s nominee for state superintendent of education. Maness received 103,608 to Ellen Weaver’s 79,077 votes.
And likewise, Catherine Fleming Bruce topped Krystle Matthews by 2,499 votes (59,777-57,278) in their bids for the Democratic Party nomination for one of the state’s seats in the U.S. Senate. The winner faces incumbent Tim Scott in November.
But those victories don’t mean anything now. When no candidate gets at least 50% of the vote, the top two vote getters advance to a runoff.
And that means supporters of the four candidates head back to the polls Tuesday, June 28, for the respective races.
Voters who voted in the June 14 party primaries can only cast ballots in the same party’s runoff.
If you voted on the Democratic side earlier this month, you cannot switch and cast a ballot in the Republican runoff this time.

However, those who did not vote June 14 may cast a ballot in their party of choice.
